Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes will gain the ability to question particular rulings from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
