Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these drugs must be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
