European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
